Make your car unwanted to thieves!
On Saturday May 14, 2011 the Boxford Police Department, in conjunction with the Governor’s Auto Theft Strike Force, will sponsor an Auto Theft Prevention Program called “Auto Etching”. The event will be held at the Boxford Fire Department’s East Station at 6 Middleton Road from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM.
The process, which takes approximately 10-15 minutes, etches the V.I.N. (Vehicle Identification Number) of your vehicle into all the glass windows of your vehicle by using a computer generated stencil and a glass reactive acid treatment. This provides a visible deterrent to theft and can be good for up to 15% off on your comprehensive auto insurance.
In order to participate you need to have the following item:
· A vehicle with a current and valid registration
· $10.00 cash, which is paid to the Auto Theft Strike Force to defray the cost of materials.
· A valid license to operate a motor vehicle in your possession.
If you have any questions about the event please contact Boxford Police Officer Matthew Dupont (978) 887-8135 or Program Director Pamela Surette, of the Governors Auto Theft Strike Force at (781) 393-1201.
VIN Etching is a chemical process where your VIN is permanently etched into the window glass of your car.
Why should you do it?
By permanently etching the VIN into the window glass, your vehicle is less likely to be stolen and the VIN can assist in the recovery if it is stolen. A warning label is applied inside the drivers’ window, alerting would be thieves that the “Vehicle has been marked for identification purposes by the Governors Auto Theft Strike Force.”
The moment your vehicle is reported stolen, its Federally Registered Identification –the VIN- becomes the mark of the stolen vehicle. Thieves are less likely to risk the theft of an easily identifiable vehicle, nor are they willing to spend the necessary time, effort and money to replace VIN marked windows, which have been etched.
